After I got deeper into miniature painting over the course of 2025, I decided to paint my first bust in December. And I had a great time. Working with this 1:10 scale by Young Miniatures allowed me to translate a lot of the techniques I would use for painting on canvas to my miniature painting. My main focus was to lean heavily into creating different material textures which gives you a lot more options to do at this scale than at smaller scales. And of course it allows you to add many different subtle details like a freehand paisley pattern on his scarf, reflecting tree lines in the glass of the gasmask or subtle secondary reflections on his chin to frame his face like I would do when painting a portrait on canvas.
